What is a phenotype?

A plant is a plant is a plant right? Well, not quite. Each seed represents new genetic potential, and they are not all exactly the same. When growing from seed, each seed may express certain traits of the parents, just like in any other breeding process. In well defined seed lines, each seed should be very similar with relatively little variation. However many seed lines are not very stable and can vary widely from seed to seed, and even in ones that are there is still potential for differences, everything from terpene type and content, to THC and other cannabinoid levels.

When hunting through seed packs, you want to find the best expressions of what you’re looking for - typically some combination of taste, smell and high. Once you’ve picked your favorite(s), you can then clone that plant for exact copies - preserving the exact same genetic as long as you continue cloning it. Some plants have been clone-only since the early 90s!

DC Advances Legalization Legislation

I’ve been quietly working behind the scenes with a coalition of like-minded small business owners and we’ve hired lawyers and lobbyists to try to make sure the eventual “correction” of the i-71 grey market is fair and equitable and us little guys don’t get run out by Big Money and their mids. Today, the mayor unveiled her proposed legislation, and I’m happy to see a number of our proposed changes, especially the micro licenses, have been included in the proposed bill. There’s still a bunch of stuff that could be tweaked and it’s another six months before it gets passed at the earliest, but hopefully soon I’ll be able to expand capacity and make it even easier to get top quality cannabis.

How to Choose the Right Strain

As mentioned in the last blog post, THC is but one measure of a strain of cannabis, and if it's the only one you're after, you may be missing on some of the best effects of the plant. After all, 190 proof grain alcohol will get you plastered the quickest, but it might not be the most enjoyable time. This chart shows another compound, terpenes, their effects, and prevalence in some popular strain (see GSC and BD for a couple of ours). These compounds, together with other cannibinoids in the plant combine in what's called the "entourage" effect, meaning the sum of the whole is greater than the parts. In this way, some strains may make you feel a certain effect of a high more than others - even if the THC content is lower!

By no means is this an exhaustive list of strains, so the best way to determine how a particular strain will affect you is of course to try it!
